This month our original cohort of Middle Leaders completed their final session of our Ready Set Move, Creating Active Schools, Middle Leaders Programme.
This is an area of work was developed in collaboration with Together an Active Future and Active Lancashire. The course was made up of teachers from nine schools across Pennine Lancashire with the aim to invest in the personal and professional development of our middle leaders. It supports them in understanding how schools can maximise every opportunity within the school day for children to move more and be more active, opening up benefits for the child’s learning, behaviour and well-being.
During the session the team started to capture some more robust qualitative data on the impact of implementing their strengths and what they valued the most from the course.
The team described the course as ‘inspirational’, ‘collaborative’ and ‘an opportunity to generate new ideas’.

Outcomes from the last session saw the first co-design of Ready Set Move Accreditation being underway with really useful insight gained into what this might look like, with three tiers to the new accreditation which will be reassessed every two years.
These tiers look to be divided into:
- Ready
- Ready Set
- Ready Set Move
- Ready Set Move More
The original middle leaders are also keen to develop an alumni network and will now be working on submitting proposals to present at the International Whole School PA conference next summer.
The course helped to support them to have the confidence to lead change within their own setting and to drip feed a strength-based leadership approach into school settings. A few comments from the Middle Leaders after finishing the course:
The middle leaders programme has been brilliant, so grateful to have been given the opportunity.
I came out feeling 10ft tall, like I could conquer the world and realised I was brilliant at lots of things.
This first set of Middle Leaders have set the scene for future middle leaders taking part in this course and shows the impact of instilling strengths into their ways of working and the value that brings when providing more physical activity opportunities within their schools.
The success of this course has led to brilliant changes achieved around practice and policy from these 9 schools involved and will be overlaid with the child activity data our team are collating. Learn more about these schools in case studies from our Sharing the Learning Report.
Places are limited for next Middle Leaders Programme which is due to start in February next year. If you’d like to register your interest please contact Helen Tyson via, CompetitionManager@btrcc.lancs.sch.uk.
