Overcoming Rural Barriers for Healthier, More Connected Communities
Our efforts in the Ribble Valley have focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the complex barriers to physical activity in a rural setting.
Through limitations of access to transportation, leisure and healthcare provisions, plus pressures of farming calendars and job roles we know that traditional methods of physical activity are not sustainable in these unique communities.
By considering the challenges of our place we have developed a few focus areas to break down those barriers unique to rural communities.
Areas of our work include:
Active Villages
The Active Village workstream aims to implement a whole systems approach to boost physical activity levels in a small village community within the Ribble Valley.
Through coordinated efforts with local stakeholders, our work has seen new activity clubs created, secured access to local land for physical activity, and proposed renovation projects to improve existing infrastructure. By actively engaging community members and incorporating their feedback, our work ensures tailored initiatives that cater to the unique needs and preferences of our place.
Active Connections
The Active Connectors workstream seeks to cultivate a collaborative network of partners across various sectors to promote physical activity in the local community.
Through education, training, and resource sharing, the workstream aims to equip healthcare providers, fitness professionals, and community organisations with the tools and knowledge necessary to enhance physical activity provisions. By mapping existing resources and enhancing strategic relationships, we aim to increase awareness, improve referral pathways, and create a comprehensive support system that encourages active living across our place.
Farming Stronger for Longer is an initiative designed to help farmers in the Ribble Valley and beyond maintain their strength, health, and mobility throughout their careers. The programme focuses on practical strategies for staying pain-free, building resilience, and improving overall well-being through tailored exercises and small lifestyle changes.
By addressing the physical demands of farming and encouraging a more balanced approach to daily activities, Farming Stronger for Longer aims to reduce the risk of injury, prevent long-term health issues, and support farmers in remaining active for longer. The initiative offers accessible resources, expert guidance, and a community-focused approach to empower farmers to look after their bodies, enhance their fitness, and continue doing the work they love with ease and longevity.
