A community partnership designed to inspire people
Let’s Move Hyndburn is a community-driven initiative aimed at reducing physical inactivity across the borough. As one of six areas involved in Sport England Pennine Lancashire’s Local Delivery Pilot, Hyndburn is pioneering approaches that bring together People, Places, and Ownership to inspire everyone to move more.
Our Purpose
The goal of Let’s Move Hyndburn is to support individuals who are usually less active or inactive, motivating them to begin or increase their activity levels in a way that feels achievable and enjoyable. By working with community partners, Let’s Move Hyndburn is responding to local needs and building programs that make physical activity accessible to all.
Creating a Legacy
This initiative is about more than just encouraging exercise—it’s about leaving a lasting impact. By fostering a culture of health and movement, Let’s Move Hyndburn hopes to create a legacy that ensures everyone in Hyndburn has the opportunity to lead a healthier, more active life.
Areas of our work include:
Active Environments
Active Environments are spaces and places that encourage and enable people to be active.
They seek to encourage all physical activity – such as active travel, children’s play and outdoor leisure.
By providing opportunities for physical activity, an Active Environment can help improve the physical and mental health of adults and children.
The Active Environments workstream aims to drive sustainable change and create inclusive opportunities for physical activity within communities in Hyndburn. By enhancing existing outdoor spaces and promoting community engagement, the aim is to address barriers to physical activity and encourage active lifestyles. Through strategic leadership and partnerships and leveraging local assets, the work is dedicated to improving infrastructure and amenities of outdoor spaces, encouraging greater use and community pride.
Through initial consultations and insights from our communities we identified an opportunity around our local parks. Through raising an awareness of exisiting facilities and showcasing our parks assets we worked with Let’s Move Hyndburn partners to create a series of events that have become the catalyst in creating a 5 year Active Environment Strategy.

Connecting People and Places
Our connecting people and places workstream focuses on utilising existing spaces and facilities within the local area to provide greater provisions of physical activity. There is a focus on affordability in areas of deprivation in which the activities have largely been decided by the community. Through partnerships and community consultations, the work has identified needs and organised events such as park runs and bike raffles to encourage uptakes in physical activity.
The work has seen investments in a local community centre and provided new activity clubs and physical activity classes for the communities. The classes have a unique component in that they also deliver life skills and mentorship for children and young people. The community centre has been established as a safe space which provides adolescents and young adults a facility capable of taking them off the streets.
Walk to the Match
The Walk to the Match workstream is focused on increasing physical activity and opportunities for social interactions whilst reducing carbon emissions by encouraging people to walk to the local football game, Accrington Stanley. Collaboration with local partners has been key to orchestrate the walk, including assistance from the police, leisure trust, supporters clubs and the local council.
In addition to organising the walk, the workstream provides less fortunate community members with opportunity to attend the match and engage with the ‘Walk to the Match’ initiative by providing free tickets giveaway to low-income families. The marketing and tracking of attendance on the walk have been collected via a QR code App which participants register. The workstream has appointed community champions to communicate to public regarding meeting points for the walk from different locations.
